Rallilegenda Hannu Mikkola on poissa

Rallilegenda Hannu Mikkola on kuollut. Mikkola kuoli 78-vuotiaana sairastettuaan syöpää.

Mikkola voitti Rallin maailmanmestaruuden vuonna 1983 ja sijoittui toiseksi kolme kertaa ja kahdesti kolmanneksi. Hän oli elementissään erityisesti Keski-Suomen sorateillä voitettuaan Jyväskylän Suurajot peräti seitsemän kertaa. Yhteensä hän voitti urallaan 18 MM-osakilpailua ja nousi palkintokorokkeelle 44 kertaa.

Nykyiset ja entiset rallikuskit kunnioittivat Mikkolan muistoa sosiaalisessa mediassa.

We lost my father Hannu to cancer this weekend. Most knew him as a rallying great who ushered in the golden years of the sport. To me he was dad - and an incredible one at that. Always supportive, loving and genuine. Also a loving grandfather to my two boys. Rest In Peace Dad

Such a sad news this morning for the WRC family. Hannu Mikkola was one of those original Flying Finns and was a real gentleman. He inspired so many people including myself & I’m glad I could meet him & share some great rally memories. My thoughts are going to his family.

Sad day for our sport as one of our legends left us today. Hannu Mikkola won the WRC same year I was born and although I never had the honor to meet him I am saddened by his passing as he will be remembered as one of the greats. My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP.
